Zemlinsky’s lavish, rarely-performed orchestral masterpiece The Mermaid is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale of the mermaid who sacrifices herself for an unrequited love, written by Zemlinsky after his rejection by Alma Schindler, in favour of her soon-to-be husband, the great composer Gustav Mahler.
