It may not feel quite like spring yet, (can you believe how much snow we got this winter!), but it is, right around the corner. Soon, the cherry blossoms will be decorating our entire city in pink petals, the warmer weather will be a constant and the sun may even come out more. Let’s get our spring warmed up with some great events happening this month. From arts to dance, sports to comedy, Vancouver is not lacking in things to see and do!
Kinesis Dance Somatheatro – Scotiabank Dance Centre

Kinesis Dance somatheatro marks its 30th anniversary with a new creation by Artistic Director Para Terezakis which continues on the conceptual path of 2015’s UW.

Harriet Krijgh – Vancouver Playhouse
Event date: March 5 | Time: 3pm
Twenty-four year old Dutch cellist Harriet Krijgh is one of today’s most exciting and promising young cellists. Harriet was chosen for the “Rising Stars” series of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) in the 2015-16 season, having been nominated by the Musikverein Vienna and the Konzerthaus Vienna.
Mozart and Shostakovich with Jeremy Denk – Orpheum Theatre
Event Dates: March 4-6 | Time: 8pm
Conductor David Danzmayr presides over a program featuring 2014 Musical America Instrumentalist of the Year Jeremy Denk performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 19, and Shostakovich’s grand storytelling work, Symphony No. 2 ‘The year 1917’, a commemoration of the Russian Revolution and a tribute of Vladimir Lenin.
The Men in White – Granville Island Stage

When Abdul’s crickeet team decides to take action to end their losing streak, they talk of recruiting Abdul’s brother, Hasan, who is an expert at the sport. But bringing Hasan from India to Canada will take more than just a plane ticket, and not all members of the team agree with the high cost. Follow this heartwarming story of how home can be foudn in sport and unite family across nations.
Ryan Belleville – The Comedy Mix

Widely regarded as one of Canada’s top stand-up comedians, he has performed for hundred of thousands of people across North America. He is the winner of a Canadian Comedy Awards, and the Phil Hartman Award for his stand up.
Alessio Bax with the VSO – Orpheum Theatre
Event date: March 11 | Time: 8pm
Maestro Tovey conducts a program that features the music of three American composers and one of their most accomplished counterparts from Canada. The Second Piano Concerto of Edward MacDowell, a composer/pianist championed and influenced by Liszt, is an eclectic, triumphant, quintessentially American work that will be performed by remarkable Italian pianist Alessio Bax, and VSO Principal Clairnet Jeanette Jonquil stars in Bernstein’s funky, jazzy Prelude, Fugue and Riffs.
Talea Ensemble – The Annex

The centrepiece of the program is Billone’s Ebe und Anders, scored for solo trumpet and trombone with ensemble. With influences ranging from cinematic music to hardcore noise rock, the evening’s program will draw connections between some of the most exciting composers of today.
Cavalia Odysseo – White Big Top at Olympic Village

With a production double the size of Cavalia’s eponymous creation, which enjoyed a very successful run in Chicago in 2009, Odysseo is a show unlike any other on the planet, an immersive theatrical experience in which horses are front and centre.

Inspector Tovey – Orpheum Theatre

Maestro Bramwell Tovey dons the Inspector hat to investigate the instruments of a symphony orchestra, in a fun and educational concert centred on Saint-Saens’ famous Carnival of the Animals.
Chris Botti in Concert with the VSO – Orpheum Theatre

Billboard chart-topper and Grammy Award-winning talent, Chris Botti is the consummate instrumental entertainer. Having performed with artists ranging from Sting to Andrea Bocelli, Botti’s amiable live performances are noted for their sophisticated arrangements, virtuosity and variety, seamlessly switching from best-selling pop classics to essential jazz standards, such as When I Fall in Love, Emmanuel and The Very Thought of You.

Florian Boesch and Miah Persson – Vancouver Playhouse

Austrian baritone Florian Boesch, one of today’s foremost Lieder interpreters, makes a welcome return to the VRS stage – this time with Swedish soprano Miah Persson. This is the first duo vocal recital in the history of the VRS with the added benefit of the wonderful Malcolm Martineau at the keyboards.

Graham Clark – The Comedy Mix

A 3-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee and co-host of Maximum Fun’s Stop Podcasting Yourself. Clark is a regular on CBC’s The Debaters and has appeared at Just for Laughs, Halifax Comedy Festival, Winnipeg Comedy Festival and Bumbershoot. He is a winer of the Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off and has appeared on HBO’s Funny as Hell.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada, four unique voices in contemporary dance in Vancouver will honour this special occasion with a BC-inspired evening in collaboration with local designers and artists.
The Mambo Kings in Hot Latin Nights – Orpheum Theatre

Renowned Pops conductor and arranger Jeff Tyzik teams up with the Mambo Kings for a sizzling night of Latin-inspired hits. Seamlessly blending symphonic music with Latin jazz and salsa, the Mambo Kings light up the stage with music by Astor Piazzolla, Ginastera, Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, Santana’s Oye Como Va, Dave Brubeck’s Blue Rondo, and their own hot Salsa stylings.
Dr Seuss The Cat in the Hat – Waterfront Theatre

The quintessential Seuss, The Cat in the Hat returns to the CTYP stage with extraordinary physical theatre, magic and movement. The Cat and his Hat appears one rainy day and turns The Boy, Sally and the Fish’s world upside down. At first it is fun, but Sally and the Boy soon find themselves in a chaotic predicament. They need to tell that Cat that his mischief is just too much.
Parisian Elegance CMS Piano and Strings – Vancouver Playhouse

The music of France has for centuries been vibrant, colourful and elegant. In this thrilling progrm of better and lesser known Gallic classics, CMS co-artistic director, pianist Wu Han, heads up a cast of six CMS artists that are sure to dazzle and delight with gems from the City of Light set off by their incomparable virtuosity: violinists Kristin Lee, Yura Lee and Amaud Sussman; violinist, Richard O’Neill, and cellis Nicholas Canellakis.
Paul Lewis – Chan Centre for the Performing Arts

VRS audiences have had the opportunity to witness paul Lewis’ rise to fame since he first performed in Vancouver in 2001. He is now regarded as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of the central European classical repertoire.
Milos: Bach to Beatles on Classical Guitar – Vancouver Playhouse

Milos Karadaglic’s career was launched by Deutsche Grammaphon in 2011 with his first commercial solo album. It topped the UK classical charts and won numerous awards, making Karadaglic, at 30, the biggest classical-guitar phenomenon since John Williams in the 1960s, and Julian Bream a decade earlier.
Jon Kimura Parker plays Beethoven – Chan Centre for the Performing Arts

One of Vancouver’s favourite sons, internationally-renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker returns home to perform Beethoven’s gorgeous Piano Concerto No. 1. Gifted young conductor Joshua Weilerstein leads a program that also includes Schumann’s beautiful awe-inspiring Rhine Symphony, and Nielsen’s enchanting symphonic oem Pan and Syrinx.
Dave Nystrom – The Comedy Mix

Canadian comedian and writer who has appeared at CTV’s Comedy Now! and won a Canadian Comedy Award and Writers Guild of Canada Award for his work on the CBC political comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
Emerson String Quartet – Vancouver Playhouse

The Emerson String Quartet has been our top returning ensemble for many years – years in which to integrate their playing so perfectly that eight hands seem to be directed by a single superb musical intelligence. Remarkably, each return concert exhibits a new vitality and freshness, most recently exciting our entire audience into a standing ovation in 2016. Accolades include nine Grammy Awards and three Gramophone Awards – unprecedented honours for a chamber music group. Aeriosa – Scotiabank Dance Centre

Aeriosa’s spectacular aerial dance shows bring together the athleticism of rock climbing and the grace and artistry of dance. Using rope rigging systems, the company creates three-dimensional performances that re-interpret gravity, unlock new movement possibilities, and delight and inspire audiences. Choreograher Julie Taffe presents a program of theatre-based work and provides revealing insights into a unique dance genre.
Sarah Tiana – The Comedy Mix

Sarah Tiana has been a “working” comedian/ex-waitress in Los Angeles since 2003. Originally from Calhoun, GA, Sarah’s act emphasizes the thrills of growing up after “The War of Northern Aggression” and trying to survive in the current battle of the sexes. Recently Sarah was seen as the red carpet host for the Roast of Justin Beiber, as well as, the roast-theme midnight episode. Currently, she can also be seen as a series regular on the Josh Wolf Show.
Refuge – Firehall Arts Centre

Refuge tells the emotionally riveting story of a former child soldier from Eritrea who seeks out his mother, a recent immigrant to Canada, and meet people who try to help him.
Redpatch – Presentation House

This historical drama focuses on a young Metis soldier from teh Nuu-chah-nulth nation of Vancouver Island who volunteers to fight for Canada in the First World War. Set in both Canada and the battlefields of France, Redpatch follows the experiences of this young soldier as he endures the horrors of trench warfare. This world premiere production will coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the historical Battle of Vimy Ridge.
Valley Song – Pacific Theatre on Hemlock and 12th

The Refugee Hotel – Studio 58

Set in a run-down hotel in 1974, only months after the start of the torturous reign of Augusto Pinochet, eight Chilean refugees struggle, at times haplessly, at times profoundly, with the effects of seeing their homeland. More than a dark comedy about a group of refugees who arrive in Vancouver after Pinochet’s coup, this play is an attempt to give voice to refugee communities from all corners of the globe.

Presenting works by forty artists, the exhibition encompasses a range of approaches and reinvigorated explorations of surrealism, abstraction, and conceptual practices.
Angels in America – Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage
