Canine Spotlight: Bella

Did you know that the Pan is pet-friendly or rather, paw-friendly? We love our four-legged friends here! In fact, a lot of our staff are human parents to dogs and cats. So we’re laughing a new blog series where we’ll introduce some of the furry children behind our Pan associates.

Let’s meet Bella, whose human is Richard Keep, Oceans 999 Restaurant Manager!

This is Bella.

I lost my last dog Kharli last September to cancer, which as any dog owner knows, leaves a big hole in your heart.

At the time, we were selling the family home and considering some other major life changes. My wife and I decided that it would be best to wait until we knew how our lives would be looking, where we were living, etc. before making that huge commitment with a new dog.

However, this wasn’t how all the members of the family were thinking and before I knew what was happening, my step-daughter Bailey had convinced my wife differently and along came this little blonde crazy ball of love, who we named Bella (Italian word for beautiful).

Although at the time, I felt an element of guilt for getting a new dog so soon after Kharli had passed, I know that as a dog person, life is too short to wait and miss out on this amazing kinship and welcoming our newest member to the family was one of the best things to happen!

When Canada’s 20th Prime Minister Stayed at the Pan

In anticipation of Canada’s 150th anniversary, we’re continuing our Canadian-themed Throw Back Thursday!

Did you know that Jean Chrétien who served as Canada’s Prime Minister from 1993-2003, shares the same birthday as Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald?

Jean Chrétien had demonstrated an interest in politics from a young age, and steadily rose through the ranks in government – as a member of Parliament and later as the Finance Minister.

On November 4, 1993, The Liberal party leader was sworn in as prime minister and stayed in office until 2003, winning a third consecutive majority government – an accomplishment not seen since 1945.  In 2009 Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the Order of Merit.

And in the spring of 1996, we were honoured to welcome then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien to the Pan.

Special Delivery to BC Women’s Hospital

Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate all the work that moms do for us on a daily basis. Not only is it important to honour moms, but we here at the Pan, also wanted to celebrate those who helped moms become the mothers they are today.

This past Sunday, a team of Pan associates delivered a special, surprise brunch to our friends – the nurses and staff – at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at BC Women’s Hospital. A small token of appreciation in recognizing all the life-saving work they do with preemies everyday.

BC Women’s Hospital is home to the largest NICU in the province, caring for approximately 1,700 babies each year, and providing medical and surgical care for babies who require special attention.

Having partnered up with BC Women’s Hospital Foundation for their signature fundraising galas the past couple of years, we were honoured to provide some culinary treats for the hardworking staff.

Spot prawn ceviche with grapefruit, Vietnamese mint and Thai basil salad, salmon dynamite roll, dungeness crab and avocado salad with king crab, and compressed watermelon with nicroise olives, arugula, and Persian feta.

i think it’s safe to say that the staff were surprised, the reactions heartwarming.

What It Means To Be Canadian Photo Contest! **CONTEST CLOSED**

In honour of Canada’s upcoming 150 anniversary, we’re holding a photo contest for dinner for four on our patio during Canada Day celebrations! 

Submit a photo that captures the spirit of our beautiful country, along with a little blurb about what it means (to you) to be Canadian.

You can show anything in your photo: yourself, your family or friends, your backyard, your province, etc – just make sure it captures the spirit of being Canadian!

Not only do we offer the best view in town, but since we’re located right above Canada Place, that means we’re just an escalator ride away from the hottest spot in town to take in the 150th anniversary Canada Day festivities!
