When Celine Dion Stayed at the Pan

Photo credit: Denise Truscello | Twitter

It’s Throwback Thursday, when we open our vaults to share with you our famous past guests. We’ve been featuring famous Canadians guests to celebrate Canada 150, and we’re capping it off with none other than Canadian chanteuse and national treasure, Celine Dion.
Known for her romantic ballads, Celine made her singing debut as a teen in the 1980s. With the help of her manager and future husband, Rene Angeli, she achieved worldwide fame, singing in both English and French. The main theme from Titanic movie, My Heart Will Go On became her biggest hit and signature song.  It sold more than 15 million copies and remains one of the best-selling singles in history.
She held a Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace from 2002-2007, which became the most successful Las Vegas residency show of all time, grossing $385 million.
Turning heads off the stage, Celine Dion is also a fashion risk-taker, and although some of her outfits are out there, they are always memorable and she absolutely owns whatever she has on.
Whatever she does, she is fearless and in May 1996, we were pleased to welcome Celine Dion to the Pan!

Canine Spotlight: Laifu and Kuma

Did you know that the Pan is pet-friendly or rather, paw-friendly? We love our four-legged friends here! In fact, a lot of our staff are human parents to dogs and cats. So we’re launching a new blog series where we’ll introduce some of the furry children behind our Pan associates.

Let’s meet Laifu and Kuma, whose human is Front Desk Agent, Emily.
Laifu (labrador) is 12 years old and Kuma (German shepherd) is 11 years old. Our labrador was shipped from Texas and we saved him just before a big flood happened. We picked up our German shepherd from Langley.

Book your stay and treat your canine companion to a wide selection of pet-friendly experiences at Pan Pacific Vancouver including a plush doggy bed, gourmet treats and dog friendly places guide. For more information, click here.

Honda Celebration of Light Is Back!

Join the hundreds of thousands of fans as they take their spot down at English Bay for the 27th anniversary of Vancouver’s spectacular fireworks competition!
  • Saturday, July 29: Japan (Akariya Firework team)
  • Wednesday, August 2: UK (Jubilee Fireworks team)
  • Saturday, August 5: Canada (Royal Pyrotechnic team)
The fireworks will begin at 10:00 pm each night – rain or shine.
Here are some helpful tips:
If the weather calls for rain, it’s recommended to bring a hooded rain jacket with you. Leave the umbrellas at home, as they impede the view for other guests.
It’s recommended to walk, bike or take public transportation to English Bay, as there will be major road closures from 7:30 pm until 11:00 pm.

To listen to the music simulcast, tune in to LG104.3FM – either on the radio or through their mobile app.
As an added bonus, there will be a free community concert series preceding the fireworks. SHOREFEST, presented by LG104.3FM, will be showcasing some of Canada’s top musical talents on the Keg Lounge stage at 8pm each night of the fireworks.
Saturday, July 29: TBA
Wednesday, August 2: The Fab Four

Summer Patio Party at Oceans 999

What better way to celebrate Canada’s upcoming sesquicentennial and the first anniversary of the opening of Oceans 999 than with a summer patio party with the best views of Vancouver!
Last month, Hudson’s Bay joined us in inviting some friends to help us kick off  summer and sample delicious cocktails and our new menu, created by Executive Chef, Geoff Carkner and his culinary team.

Guests dined on delicious cold and hot passed items such as: mini lobster rolls on brioche with citrus and fennel, spot prawn ceviche with compressed watermelon and black olives, beef carpaccio on crostini with sea urchin roe, dungeness crab salad with horseradish, basil and granny smith apple, halibut sliders with miso aioli and Japanese coleslaw, sake kasu sablefish with ginger syrup poached tomato, and Thai chicken wings with fish caramel, crushed peanuts, cilantro and mint.

At the various action stations, there were maple and rye whiskey 48 hour beef brisket with Chilliwack corn bread, and BC oysters. Desserts included liquid nitrogen maple stout beer ice cream with Okanagan cherries, mini flapper pies, nanaimo bars, and ice wine sabayon and fresh Saskatoon berry compote. Delish!

EVO Summer Cinema – Schedule and What to Bring

Evo Summer Cinema Series are making their way back to Vancouver! The annual outdoor movies in the park will take place at Second Beach in Stanley Park every Tuesday from July 4th to August 25th.
The weekly event, which typically brings in over 5,000 people per screening, will transform the park into an outdoor cinema featuring a four-storey inflatable movie screen.
Given the popularity of the event, it is highly recommended that you arrive early as it’s a first-come-first-serve seating arrangement on the grass. In this case, being the early bird will score you great seats but also give you the opportunity to participate in games, activities, contests and stock up on movie snacks from participating food trucks. The movies are set to start at dusk so you may want to lookup sunset times to get a better idea of when to arrive.
Not a fan of sitting on the grass? Looking to guarantee your spot at the outdoor theater? For $21, you can reserve one of the 100 front-row, reserved Adirondack cottage-style seats reserved in the TOPSHOP TOPMAN Gold Circle VIP Seating Zone. In addition to VIP seating, you can book a “Dinner & a Movie” package which features a dinner at a local restaurant and a reserved seat at the park

What you should bring:

  • Blanket(s) – one for the floor and one to wrap yourself in in-case you get cold
  • Warm clothes – as mentioned above, it could get chilly… so be prepared
  • Insect repellent – You can never be too prepared!
  • Lawn chairs – Only if you plan on sitting on the outskirts
  • A bike – take advantage of the beautiful scenery Stanley Park has to offer before you make your way over to the show. There will even be a bike valet to securely store your bike while you enjoy the flick.

What you shouldn’t bring:

  • Cigarettes – this is a family environment and cigarettes are banned in all Vancouver parks
  • Alcohol – Yes, we know it’s nice to have a drink or two while enjoying a movie but it is a family event and you should be respectful to those around you
  • Garbage – We don’t expect you to bring garbage with you but if you do decide to bring snacks and drinks, make sure to throw the trash out and recycle the bottles/cans

Featured Movies:

  • July 4 – The LEGO Batman Movie
  • July 11 – The Goonies
  • July 18 – Toy Story
  • July 25 – National Lampoon’s Vacation
  • August 1 – Beauty and the Beast – Sing-A-Long
  • August 8 – JAWS
  • August 15 – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • August 22 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Event Details:
When: Every Tuesday – July 7 to August 25
Where: Ceperley Meadows (Second Beach), Stanley Park
Time: Dusk
Cost: Free or $20 for VIP seating
